Lander Se presents SENSE — a solo exhibition by artist, gallery founder and curator Hannah Nowlan, unfolding this October. SENSE converges oil painting and perfume oils into an immersive installation where landscape is experienced not only through colour and gesture, but also through scent, atmosphere and memory.

Bringing together Nowlan’s established painting practice with her newly developed work in scent-making, the exhibition explores the spirit of place and the feelings conjured in landscape — its atmosphere, colour, texture and season lingering in the mind and felt through the body.

Each painting carries a corresponding scent, crafted from natural essential oils, resins, and absolutes. In dialogue, the two practices echo one another: colours become notes, textures become accords, memory becomes material.

Much like painting with transparent oil glazes, scent-making is an alchemy of layering, intuition, and transformation. Both are acts of distillation—translating raw materials into something more poetic. Top notes mirror horizons, base notes ground us to the earth, while heart notes hold the atmosphere in between.

For Nowlan, these practices have become inseparable threads. Her abstracted, mythological landscapes draw from the Peninsula’s shifting coastlines, weather systems and bushland, while the perfumes extend these works beyond the canvas, an intimate trace back to place.

SENSE invites audiences to slow down, to experience art not just with the eyes but with the whole body, and to find connection with landscape through colour, scent, and spirit.
