Artist Statement
Tashi Columbro’s multidisciplinary practice infuses her Greek-Australian lived experience with an intuitive approach to both painting and ceramics which champions spontaneity in the making process. Using images from her family’s photographic archive, and stories held dear by her yiayia as departure points, Columbro creates works exploring the power of generational storytelling and matrescence.
Theme: EMBER
These paintings are an attempt to capture the essence of places I visit with my children and how they will remember them. My process involves layering rich colours with a light hand, very few brush strokes hold the exact same colour, a balance between heat and haze. A dream or a vision of a past emotional state. Centennial Park, where we've spent hours bush bashing and dog walking, Kangaroo Valley from family holidays and trips, places that will be patched together as memories. The vivid colours, translucent elements and contrasting shadows give the landscapes the feel of being both deeply rooted and powerfully imagined.
