Artist Statement

'Urns for the Living'. My sculpture possesses textures and shapes reflecting my interest in materiality, purity of form and preference of seeing the hand of the artist. I have made multifunctional artworks, blurring what is functional and non-functional. A platter to hold ripe fruit, a vessel to hold the live flowers and candles that can never light. My sculpture explores attempts to summon the ineffable into comprehension and to pay tribute to shaping the abstract into recognition.

Past collections I have worked on have been prints using ready-made objects and paintings using historical textiles as inspiration. My current sculptures reconcile my thoughts about permanence and what should be taken and left from this world. I am interested in challenging concepts often considered taboo or overlooked. My art practice has progressed since moving away from directing several successful art and design-based businesses, Lumiere Art + Co, Keep Store and Industria X. I am currently teaching giving me a wonderful balance of mentoring and staying engaged in contemporary ideas and issues.

Theme: ENCHANTMENT

I want to manifest the liminal space between life and death; the clay fired in an echo of the body, leaving us with an incarnation to contemplate after life. My intentions when I have made each piece is that they could possibly house ashes or in stark contrast, flowers and foliage, universal symbols of life.
