Artist Statement

A self taught artist, my creative practice has evolved alongside a lifelong love of interior design, fashion, folklore, storytelling, photography and textiles. Since childhood I've been drawn to the imaginative and ornate world of decoration and elements of beauty found in everyday life. As well as being influenced by the great still life, landscape and impressionist artists, my formative years were enriched by the opportunity to explore a broad range of creative pursuits during university, where I studied fashion and textile design.

Today I practice as both an illustrative textile designer and traditional artist through the medium of painting, primarily working with acrylic on canvas and moving between abstract, semi-abstract and still life subjects. My paintings are defined by a soft, feminine palette of pastels and earth tones, envoking a quiet tension between expressive marks of bold colour, and ethereal, dreamlike shapes and poignant vignettes created by layering.

Theme: EMBER

'Cicada Hum is a retrospective and personal reflection of my memories connected to land and bush, shaped by my upbringing in regional NSW and time spent further West at my grandmother’s home. The work draws on sensory memories, such as dense heat rising from the wide tarred roads, the consistent hum of cicadas, and vast, dusty bushland beyond her back garden, evoking an almost tangible nostalgia. Soft layering and gestures contrast marks resemble crackling embers. The heat of the landscape is enduring and alive against the hush and gentle rhythms of a sleepy country town.'
